How to Play Craps

Craps is one of the most popular table games in the world, but it can also be confusing for a new player. To make things simple, we are going to explain how a normal round of craps goes. This should help you learn how to play craps. We are going to stick to the normal bets for this article, because there are dozens of bets but most players stick to just one bet: the pass line.

The Pass Line

Players who bet on the pass line are hoping that the first roll is a 7 or 11, resulting in a 1:1 payout. However, if the first roll is a 2, 3, or 12, then the pass line bet loses. If the first roll is anything other than a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12, then the "point" is established.

If a "point" is established, the same person continues rolling the dice until they either:

  1. Roll the "point" again, resulting in a win for pass line bets.
  2. Roll a 7, resulting in a loss for pass line bets.

One either of the above options happens, the "shooter" (the person throwing the dice) passes the dice to their left, and the process repeats.

Other Bets

Besides the Pass Line there are quite a few other bets, but they all revolve around the pass line. For example, there is the Don't Pass Line, which hopes the first roll (the "come out roll") is a 2, 3, or 12, and if a point is established, the Don't Pass Line bet hopes the 7 comes before the point. It is basically the opposite of the Pass Line bet in every aspect.

You can also make bets on propositions such as that the next roll will bring about snake eyes, or the next roll will be a six, or the next roll won't be a seven, and on and on. There are virtually an endless amount of bet combinations you can make, but beware:

The pass line and don't pass line bets have excellent odds with under a 2% house edge, but the proposition bets usually have house edges closer to 10%. They're sucker bets.

The Craps Table

Craps tables are very large, and have a deep center with a felt lining all around. The deep center is designed to withhold the dice as they bounce around, because if a die goes off the table, it is out of play and you have to reroll. Craps is usually played with 5-20 people around the table, as anyone can bet on the outcome of the rolls - not just the shooter.
